On Laughter, Unconscious Communication, Rupture, and Resuscitation

Drawing from ideas in Nuar Alsadir's Animal Joy: A Book of Laughter and Resuscitation, this talk will explore the ways in which laughter can act as a form of unconscious communication. Because of the positive associations most people have to laughter, its meaning often flies beneath the social—and, often, analytic—radar, even as it has the potential to collapse the alliance between an analyst and an analysand.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify different forms of laughter
and how each communicates outside of language.
2. Participants will learn to identify unconscious communication,
countertransference, and enactments.
3. Participants will learn how to use their understanding of
laughter's different modes of communication in the treatment.
Nuar Alsadir, Ph.D., L.P., is a psychoanalyst, poet, and nonfiction writer. She is the author of the books Animal Joy: A Book of Laughter and Resuscitation (Graywolf, 2022), which was one of TIME’s 100 must-read books of 2022 and a best book of 2022 from Publishers Weekly; Fourth Person Singular (Liverpool University Press, 2017), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry and the Forward Prize for Best Collection in England and in Ireland; and More Shadow Than Bird (Salt Publishing, 2012). Dr. Alsadir’s writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New Yorker, The Best American Essays 2025, The Paris Review, The New York Times Magazine, Granta, The Yale Review, and The Kenyon Review. She received training from New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, IPTAR, and the Melanie Klein Trust. She lives in New York City, where she works as a psychoanalyst in private practice and teaches in the graduate creative writing MFA program at New York University.
